Hoje o assunto é um daqueles phrasal verbs que todo mundo acha que já conhece… mas que ainda guarda algumas surpresas: give up.
A maioria dos cursos e livros de inglês apresenta give up apenas com o sentido de desistir. E, claro, esse uso é super comum. Mas a verdade é que esse phrasal verb vai muito além disso.
Dependendo do contexto, give up pode significar parar um hábito, abandonar algo, entregar algo a alguém, e até revelar uma informação. Ou seja, é uma expressão pequena, mas cheia de possibilidades.

1. DESISTIR, PARAR DE FAZER ALGO
O primeiro significado básico de give up é desistir de algo ou parar de fazer algo, num gesto de renúncia mesmo. Quando usamos give up com outro verbo na frente, temos que usar a forma -ing, pois o up aqui é preposição e depois de toda preposição, se vier um verbo, ele tem que vir com -ing.
After twenty years, Maria finally gave up drinking coffee every morning. (Depois de vinte anos, Maria finalmente desistiu de tomar café todas as manhãs.)
He gave up playing video games when he started university. (Ele parou de jogar videogame quando começou a faculdade.)
The doctor advised her to give up eating red meat for health reasons. (O médico a aconselhou a parar de comer carne vermelha por razões de saúde.)
Tom gave up his weekly gym sessions after he got a new job with longer hours. (Tom abandonou suas sessões semanais de academia depois que conseguiu um novo emprego com jornadas mais longas.)
She gave up watching the news because it was making her too anxious. (Ela parou de assistir ao noticiário porque estava ficando ansiosa demais.)

2. PARAR DE TENTAR FAZER ALGO
Aqui o significado é realmente desistir, jogar a toalha e admitir que algo não será possível. Também pode ser usado com a forma -ing.
After hours of trying to fix the computer, he finally gave up and called a technician. (Depois de horas tentando consertar o computador, ele finalmente desistiu e chamou um técnico.)
She gave up trying to convince her parents to let her study abroad. (Ela desistiu de tentar convencer os pais a deixá-la estudar no exterior.)
Don’t give up just because things are getting difficult. You’re almost there! (Não desista só porque as coisas estão ficando difíceis. Você está quase lá!)
The rescue team has not given up the search for the missing hiker. (A equipe de resgate não abandonou a busca pelo excursionista desaparecido.)
I gave up trying to understand the instructions and just figured it out on my own. (Desisti de tentar entender as instruções e simplesmente resolvi por conta própria.)
He gave up looking for a new apartment in the city because the prices were too high. (Ele desistiu de procurar um novo apartamento na cidade porque os preços estavam altos demais.)
I give up! Just tell me the answer, I’ve been thinking about this riddle for an hour! (Eu desisto! Me diz a resposta, vai, estou pensando nesse enigma há uma hora!)
Even after several rejections, she refused to give up her dream of becoming an actress. (Mesmo após várias rejeições, ela se recusou a abandonar o sonho de se tornar atriz.)
The scientists gave up the experiment after months of inconclusive results. (Os cientistas abandonaram o experimento após meses de resultados inconclusivos.)
He gave up trying to repair the old car and decided to buy a new one instead. (Ele desistiu de tentar consertar o carro velho e decidiu comprar um novo.)
3. RENDER-SE
O terceiro significado de give up é render-se, entregar-se, geralmente à polícia.
After three days on the run, the fugitive finally gave himself up to the authorities. (Depois de três dias foragido, o fugitivo finalmente se entregou às autoridades.)
The suspected terrorist gave himself up peacefully at the airport before boarding the flight. (O suposto terrorista se entregou pacificamente no aeroporto antes de embarcar no voo.)
His own brother eventually gave him up to the police after learning about the crime. (O próprio irmão dele acabou o entregando à polícia após saber sobre o crime.)
Surrounded by officers with no way to escape, the gang leader gave himself up without a fight. (Cercado por policiais sem saída, o líder da gangue se entregou sem resistência.)
The soldiers gave themselves up to the enemy after running out of food and ammunition. (Os soldados se renderam ao inimigo depois de ficar sem comida e munição.)
The wanted criminal’s girlfriend gave him up to the police in exchange for a reduced sentence. (A namorada do criminoso procurado o entregou à polícia em troca de uma pena reduzida.)

Aqui neste caso, give up significa doar ou dedicar tempo para alguma atividade.

He doesn’t mind giving up a few hours a week to help his neighbours with their groceries. (Ele não se importa em dedicar algumas horas por semana para ajudar os vizinhos com as compras.)
The professor gave up his lunch breaks to give extra tuition to struggling students. (O professor dedicou seus intervalos do almoço para dar aulas extras aos alunos com dificuldades.)
Would you be willing to give up some of your free time to help organise the charity event? (Você estaria disposto a dedicar um pouco do seu tempo livre para ajudar a organizar o evento beneficente?)
She gave up her evenings for an entire month to finish the project on time. (Ela dedicou suas noites por um mês inteiro para terminar o projeto no prazo.)
Many parents give up their weekends to take their children to sports training and competitions. (Muitos pais dedicam seus fins de semana para levar os filhos a treinos e competições esportivas.)

She willingly gave up her afternoons to care for her elderly mother after the surgery. (Ela voluntariamente dedicou suas tardes para cuidar da mãe idosa após a cirurgia.)
5. CEDER
O quinto significado de give up é ceder algo a alguém.
He gave up his place in the line to an elderly woman who looked exhausted. (Ele cedeu seu lugar na fila a uma senhora idosa que parecia esgotada.)
The government pressured the indigenous community to give up their ancestral lands, but they firmly refused. (O governo pressionou a comunidade indígena a ceder suas terras ancestrais, mas eles se recusaram firmemente.)
She was forced to give her apartment up when she could no longer afford the rent. (Ela foi obrigada a abrir mão do apartamento quando não conseguiu mais pagar o aluguel.)
He gave up his seat on the crowded train to a pregnant woman without hesitation. (Ele cedeu seu assento no trem lotado a uma mulher grávida sem hesitar.)
The company was ordered by the court to give up all documents related to the fraud investigation. (A empresa foi ordenada pelo tribunal a entregar todos os documentos relacionados à investigação de fraude.)

She was put under enormous pressure to give the painting up to the museum, but she chose to keep it in the family. (Ela foi submetida a uma enorme pressão para ceder a pintura ao museu, mas optou por mantê-la na família.)
6. TERMINAR UM RELACIONAMENTO
Ah, é uma barra terminar um relacionamento, mas o give up também é usado com este significado.
She knew she had to give him up, even though she was still deeply in love with him. (Ela sabia que tinha que largar ele, mesmo ainda estando profundamente apaixonada por ele.)
Her friends kept telling her to give him up, but she simply couldn’t imagine life without him. (As amigas ficavam dizendo a ela para largar ele, mas ela simplesmente não conseguia imaginar a vida sem ele.)
He finally gave her up after realising that their relationship had no future. (Ele finalmente a deixou depois de perceber que o relacionamento deles não tinha futuro.)
Despite everything he had put her through, she found it almost impossible to give him up. (Apesar de tudo pelo que ele a havia feito passar, ela achou quase impossível deixá-lo.)
Her parents disapproved of the relationship, but she refused to give him up for anyone. (Os pais dela desaprovavam o relacionamento, mas ela se recusou a largá-lo por causa de alguém.)

7. ACHAR QUE ESTÁ MORTO/PERDIDO
Temos duas collocations (combinações de palavras) bem comuns com o phrasal verb give up: give someome up for dead (dar alguém como morto) e give someone up for lost (dar alguém como perdido). Nestes dois casos, geralmente cessam as buscas por tais pessoas.
After two weeks with no signs of life, the rescue team gave the missing climbers up for dead. (Depois de duas semanas sem sinais de vida, a equipe de resgate deu os alpinistas desaparecidos por mortos.)
The sailors had been given up for lost after their boat was found drifting with no one on board. (Os marinheiros tinham sido dados por perdidos depois que o barco foi encontrado à deriva sem ninguém a bordo.)
His family had given him up for dead after he disappeared in the jungle for over three months. (Sua família o havia dado por morto depois que ele desapareceu na selva por mais de três meses.)
The soldiers were given up for lost after the battle, so their return home was met with tears of disbelief. (Os soldados foram dados por perdidos após a batalha, então seu retorno para casa foi recebido com lágrimas de descrença.)
Everyone had given her up for dead when she miraculously walked into the village after surviving alone in the wilderness for weeks. (Todos a haviam dado por morta quando ela milagrosamente entrou na vila após sobreviver sozinha na natureza por semanas.)

8. APLAUDIR
Aqui, give it up for someone significa aplaudir alguém e é usado geralmente no imperativo.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for our incredible host for the evening, Mr James Carter!” (“Senhoras e senhores, um grande aplauso para o nosso incrível apresentador da noite, o Sr. James Carter!”)
“Come on everybody, give it up for the band that has kept us dancing all night long!” (“Vamos lá pessoal, um aplauso para a banda que nos manteve dançando a noite toda!”)
“Let’s give it up for our graduating students, who have worked so hard to get to this moment!” (“Vamos aplaudir nossos formandos, que trabalharam tanto para chegar a este momento!”)
“One more time, give it up for the amazing volunteers who made tonight’s event possible!” (“Mais uma vez, um aplauso para os incríveis voluntários que tornaram o evento desta noite possível!”)
“Please give it up for our guest speaker, who has travelled all the way from Tokyo to be here with us tonight!” (“Por favor, aplaudam nosso palestrante convidado, que viajou de Tóquio para estar aqui conosco esta noite!”)
“Are you ready? Then give it up for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the champions of this year’s tournament!” (“Estão prontos? Então aplaudam o momento que todos esperavam: os campeões do torneio deste ano!)
“Before we wrap up, let’s give it up for our fantastic crew working behind the scenes to make this show happen every night!” (“Antes de encerrarmos, vamos aplaudir nossa fantástica equipe que trabalha nos bastidores para fazer este show acontecer todas as noites!”)
“Come on, give it up for young Sophia, who just performed her very first piano recital!” (“Vamos lá, um aplauso para a pequena Sofia, que acabou de fazer seu primeiro recital de piano!”)
“Put your hands together and give it up for the winner of this year’s best newcomer award!” (“Batam palmas e aplaudam o vencedor do prêmio de melhor estreante deste ano!”)
“One last time tonight, give it up for our extraordinary performers who gave everything they had on that stage!” (“Uma última vez esta noite, uma salva de palmas para nossos extraordinários artistas que deram tudo de si naquele palco!”)
9. PIFAR, MORRER
Aqui temos uma expressão idiomática bem divertida e comum em inglês: give up the ghost. Literalmente traduziríamos como desistir do fantasma, mas ela quer dizer pifar, quebrar (um equipamento) ou simplesmente morrer, bater as botas.
After fifteen years of faithful service, my old washing machine finally gave up the ghost last Sunday. (Depois de quinze anos de serviço fiel, minha velha máquina de lavar finalmente entregou os pontos no último domingo.)
The printer gave up the ghost right in the middle of an important job, leaving the whole office in chaos. (A impressora pifou bem no meio de um trabalho importante, deixando todo o escritório em caos.)
His car gave up the ghost on the highway, and he had to wait two hours for a tow truck. (O carro dele parou de funcionar na rodovia, e ele teve que esperar duas horas por um guincho.)
My laptop has finally given up the ghost. I think it’s time to invest in a new one. (Meu laptop finalmente pifou. Acho que é hora de investir em um novo.)
The old air conditioning unit gave up the ghost on the hottest day of the summer. (O velho ar-condicionado pifou no dia mais quente do verão.)
The wounded soldier gave up the ghost before the medics could reach him on the battlefield. (O soldado ferido bateu as botas antes que os médicos pudessem chegar até ele no campo de batalha.)
Surrounded by his loved ones, the old man peacefully gave up the ghost in the early hours of the morning. (Cercado por seus entes queridos, o velho faleceu pacificamente nas primeiras horas da manhã.)
The great novelist gave up the ghost before he could finish what would have been his most ambitious work. (O grande romancista faleceu antes de poder terminar o que teria sido sua obra mais ambiciosa.)
The ancient oak tree, which had stood for over three hundred years, finally gave up the ghost after the violent storm. (O antigo carvalho, que havia resistido por mais de trezentos anos, finalmente sucumbiu após a violenta tempestade.)
The village elder gave up the ghost at the age of ninety-seven, leaving behind a legacy that would never be forgotten. (O ancião da vila faleceu aos noventa e sete anos, deixando um legado que jamais seria esquecido.)
