IN THE BEGINNING…
(No Começo…)
On the first day God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of 20 years.” (No primeiro dia, Deus criou o cachorro e disse: “Sente-se o dia todo na porta da sua casa e lata para quem entrar ou passar. Por isso, eu lhe darei uma expectativa de vida de 20 anos.”)
The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only 10 years and I’ll give you back the other 10?” (O cachorro disse: “Isso é muito tempo latindo. Que tal apenas 10 anos e eu lhe devolvo os outros 10?”)
And God agreed… (E Deus concordou…)
On the second day God created the monkey and said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a 20-year life span.” (No segundo dia, Deus criou o macaco e disse: “Entretenha as pessoas, faça truques e as faça rir. Por isso, eu lhe darei uma expectativa de vida de 20 anos.”)
The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for 20 years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back 10, like the dog did?” (O macaco disse: “Truques de macaco por 20 anos? Isso é muito tempo para se apresentar. Que tal eu lhe devolver 10, como o cachorro fez?”)
And God agreed… (E Deus concordou…)
On the third day God created the cow and said, “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of 60 years.” (No terceiro dia, Deus criou a vaca e disse: “Você deve ir para o campo com o fazendeiro o dia todo e sofrer sob o sol, ter bezerros e dar leite para sustentar a família do fazendeiro. Por isso, eu lhe darei uma expectativa de vida de 60 anos.”)
The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life, you want me to live for 60 years. How about 20 and I’ll give back the other 40?” (A vaca disse: “Essa é uma vida meio difícil, você quer que eu viva por 60 anos. Que tal 20 e eu lhe devolvo os outros 40?”)
And God agreed… (E Deus concordou…)
On the fourth day God created humans and said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you 20 years.” (No quarto dia, Deus criou os humanos e disse: “Comam, durmam, brinquem, casem e aproveitem a vida. Por isso, eu lhes darei 20 anos.”)
But the human said, “Only 20 years? Could you possibly give me my 20, the 40 the cow gave back, the 10 the monkey gave back and the 10 the dog gave back; that makes 80, OK?” (Mas o humano disse: “Apenas 20 anos? Você poderia, por acaso, me dar meus 20, os 40 que a vaca devolveu, os 10 que o macaco devolveu e os 10 que o cachorro devolveu; isso dá 80, OK?”)
“OK,” said God, “you asked for it.” (“OK”, disse Deus, “você pediu.”)
So that is why for our first 20 years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next 40 years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next 10 years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last 10 years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. (É por isso que, durante nossos primeiros 20 anos, comemos, dormimos, brincamos e nos divertimos. Nos 40 anos seguintes, nos esforçamos sob o sol para sustentar nossa família. Nos 10 anos seguintes, fazemos truques de macaco para entreter os netos. E nos últimos 10 anos, sentamos na varanda da frente e latimos para todo mundo.)
