Se você já leu um contrato em inglês, daqueles cheios de cláusulas intermináveis, linguagem formal e uma certa “cara de latim moderno”, provavelmente esbarrou em um phrasal verb que parece simples, mas carrega um peso jurídico enorme: set forth.
À primeira vista, pode até parecer apenas mais um phrasal verb qualquer. Algo como set up, set out, set off… tudo meio parecido, certo? Mas aqui vai o ponto crucial: no inglês jurídico, set forth não é apenas mais uma combinação de verbo + preposição. Ele é uma peça técnica, precisa, quase cirúrgica.
E entender isso muda completamente o seu nível de leitura (e principalmente de escrita) em legal English. Porque quando um contrato diz que algo está set forth herein, não está simplesmente colocando ou mostrando alguma coisa. Está formalmente estabelecendo, definindo, registrando com validade jurídica.
