Because legal fees would have devoured what little they had, the brothers divided the property themselves, without the help of a notary.

The youngest brother sat on a mossy stone, his head in his hands, thoroughly miserable. “My brothers can join forces,” he lamented to the empty air. “With the mill and the donkey, they can earn an honest living. But what about me? Once I have eaten this poor cat, and perhaps made a fuzzy muff out of his fur to keep my hands warm in winter, I shall surely starve to death.”

The youth was entirely taken aback to hear a cat speak, but he remembered the clever, cunning tricks the feline used when stalking mice—hanging by his back legs or hiding in the grain to play dead. Penniless and with nothing left to lose, the young man spent his last few coins to procure the boots and the sack.

The cat pulled on his new boots with a flourish. They fit perfectly. Slinging the sack over his shoulder and gripping the drawstrings with his front paws, he marched proudly into a nearby warren where wild rabbits loved to graze.

The cat baited his trap by putting sweet carrots and fresh dandelions inside the sack. He then laid perfectly still on the ground and played dead, waiting for greed to outrun caution.

It didn’t take long. A young, naive, and delightfully plump rabbit hopped right into the open bag to feast on the dandelions. Swish! The cat pulled the cords tight, securing his prize, and marched straight to the royal palace.

For the next three months, the cat repeated this routine. One day it was a pair of partridges caught in a cornfield; another day, a brace of fat quails. The King grew increasingly fond of this mysterious Marquis of Carabas who kept his royal kitchen so well-stocked with fine game.

The cat rushed back to his master. “If you value your future, do exactly as I say,” he commanded. “Go down to the river, strip off your rags, and bathe. Leave the rest to me.”
(O gato correu de volta para seu mestre. “Se você dá valor ao seu futuro, faça exatamente o que eu digo”, ordenou. “Desça até o rio, tire seus trapos e tome banho. Deixe o resto comigo.”)
The young man obeyed without understanding the plot. While he was splashing in the cool water, the heavy, gilded royal carriage rumbled down the road. Suddenly, the cat began to shriek at the top of his lungs:

While the guards pulled the shivering Marquis from the river, the cat slipped over to the carriage and spun a masterful lie to the King. He claimed that while his master was bathing, a band of ruthless thieves had stolen his magnificent wardrobe. In reality, the cat had hidden the young man’s ragged clothes beneath a large boulder.

Hearing this, the King immediately sent his servants back to the palace to fetch one of his finest embroidered velvet suits for the young man. Once dressed in these royal garments, the miller’s son looked astonishingly handsome.

Delighted that his plan was unfolding seamlessly, the cat ran far ahead of the carriage to prepare the scenery. He came across a group of peasants clearing a vast, beautiful meadow.
(Encantado ao ver que seu plano estava se desenrolando perfeitamente, o gato correu muito à frente da carruagem para preparar o cenário. Ele encontrou um grupo de camponeses limpando um vasto e belo prado.)
“Listen to me, good people!” the cat hissed, baring his claws. “The King’s carriage is coming this way. If you do not tell him that this meadow belongs to the Marquis of Carabas, you shall all be chopped up into mincemeat like paté!”

Terrified by the cat’s threat, the peasants replied in unison, “To the Marquis of Carabas, Your Majesty!”

The cat continued to run ahead, stopping next at a massive wheat field where harvesters were working. He gave them the exact same terrifying warning. Sure enough, when the King inquired, the harvesters cried, “This wheat belongs to the Marquis of Carabas!” The King was marveling at the immense wealth of the young man, while the young man simply nodded along, playing the part of a modest nobleman.

Finally, the cat arrived at the gates of a breathtaking, majestic castle. This estate was the true source of all the surrounding wealth, and it belonged to an immensely rich Ogre. This Ogre was not just wealthy; he was a powerful sorcerer capable of transforming himself into any creature on Earth.
(Por fim, o gato chegou aos portões de um castelo majestoso e de tirar o fôlego. Aquela propriedade era a verdadeira fonte de toda a riqueza da região e pertencia a um Ogro extremamente rico. Esse Ogro não era apenas rico; era também um poderoso feiticeiro capaz de se transformar em qualquer criatura da Terra.)
The cat requested an audience, adjusting his boots before stepping into the Ogre’s cavernous hall.

“I could not pass through your lands,” the cat said smoothly, “without paying my respects to a magician of your legendary renown. I have been told you can transform yourself into a lion, or even an elephant. But surely, that is a mere rumor?”

In a flash of light, the Ogre transformed into a roaring, ferocious lion. The sight was so terrifying that the cat lost his composure completely, leaping up the tapestries and clinging to the ceiling molding, his boots slipping precariously on the woodwork. Only when the Ogre returned to his natural form did the cat slide back down, panting.
(Num clarão de luz, o Ogro transformou-se em um leão feroz e rugidor. A visão foi tão aterrorizante que o gato perdeu completamente a compostura, saltando sobre as tapeçarias e agarrando-se às molduras do teto, enquanto suas botas escorregavam perigosamente na madeira. “That was incredibly impressive,” the cat wheezed, straightening his whiskers. “But it must be easy for a creature of your massive stature to become something large. I suppose it is entirely impossible for you to take the shape of something truly small… like a mouse? That, I imagine, requires too much delicacy.”
(“Isso foi incrivelmente impressionante”, disse o gato, ofegante, alisando os bigodes. “Mas deve ser fácil para uma criatura de seu tamanho colossal transformar-se em algo grande. “Impossible?!” the Ogre sneered. “Nothing is impossible for me!”

Poof! The giant vanished, and a tiny brown mouse began scurrying across the marble floor. Without wasting a single breath, the cat sprang forward, pinned the rodent beneath his claw, and swallowed it whole.

ACT V: A ROYAL WEDDING AND A LIFETIME OF LUXURY

Moments later, the rumble of wheels echoed across the drawbridge. The cat rushed out to meet the royal carriage as it pulled into the courtyard.
(Momentos depois, o estrondo das rodas ecoou pela ponte levadiça. O gato correu para receber a carruagem real quando ela entrou no pátio do castelo.)
“Welcome, Your Majesty,” the cat bowed, opening the carriage door, “to the castle of my master, the Marquis of Carabas!”

The King gasped, looking up at the towering stone spires and immaculate gardens where dozens of gardeners worked. “My dear Marquis!” the King exclaimed. “Is this magnificent palace yours as well? The architecture is splendid! Let us see the interior.”

The Marquis offered his hand to the young princess, and together they followed the King inside. The halls were lined with marble, gold leaf, and fine art. They eventually found their way to a grand banquet hall, where a magnificent feast had already been laid out. The Ogre’s chefs had prepared it for their master’s friends, but upon hearing their master had been eaten by a cat, they gladly served the King instead.
(O Marquês ofereceu a mão à jovem princesa e, juntos, seguiram o rei para o interior do castelo. Os salões eram revestidos de mármore, folhas de ouro e obras de arte refinadas. Por fim, chegaram a um grande salão de banquetes, onde um magnífico banquete já estava preparado. Os cozinheiros do Ogro o haviam preparado para os amigos de seu mestre, mas, ao saberem que o patrão havia sido devorado por um gato, serviram alegremente o rei em seu lugar.)
The wine flowed freely, and the feast was a triumph. The King watched his daughter, whose eyes shone with adoration whenever she looked at the handsome young man. Blown away by the Marquis’s vast lands, his spectacular palace, and his gentle, noble demeanor, the King raised his goblet:
(O vinho corria à vontade, e o banquete foi um enorme sucesso. O rei observava sua filha, cujos olhos brilhavam de adoração sempre que olhava para o belo jovem. Impressionado com as vastas terras do Marquês, seu espetacular palácio e sua postura gentil e nobre, o rei ergueu sua taça:)
“My dear Marquis, you are a man of unparalleled fortune and grace. If it pleases you, I would be proud to call you my son-in-law.”

The young miller, overwhelmed with joy, accepted the offer on the spot. He married the princess that very afternoon in the castle chapel.

They lived a long, blissful life of luxury and love, eventually filling the castle with many children. As for the cat, he never had to hunt out of hunger again. He was appointed the High Prime Minister of the estate, wore bespoke boots crafted from the softest imported Italian leather, and only chased mice when he felt like amusing himself.
